How to Use This Calculator

Choose round or square, enter the size, and pick party or wedding slice size. Optionally enter your guest count to get a cake size recommendation.

The Formula

Round area = pi x (d/2)^2 | Square area = side^2
Servings = area / slice area (3 sq in party, 2 sq in wedding)

Servings are pure geometry: usable cake area divided by slice area. Real cakes lose a little to the domed top and crumbly edges, so the calculator rounds down. Tiered cakes are calculated tier by tier and summed.

Worked Example

10 inch round, party slices: area = 3.1416 x 25 = 78.5 sq in. Divided by 3 sq in per slice = 26, rounded down to 24 to account for edge loss. Wedding slices: 78.5 / 2 = 39, rounded to 36.

Wedding vs Party Servings

Wedding servings are traditionally 1 x 2 inch slices because cake is served alongside other desserts and the slices look elegant. Party servings are more generous at 2 x 2 inches since cake is often the main dessert. This calculator uses party servings by default because most home bakers cut bigger slices than caterers do. If you are baking for a wedding, multiply the result by 1.5 to convert party servings to wedding servings.

Cutting for Maximum Servings

For round cakes, cut a circle 2 inches from the edge, slice that ring, then cut the center. This grid method yields far more even slices than wedges. For sheet cakes, mark a grid with a ruler before cutting. Chilling the cake 30 minutes before slicing gives cleaner cuts and less waste.

Planning for Events

Always bake for 10 percent more servings than your guest count. Some guests take seconds, some slices crumble, and running out of cake is worse than having leftovers. For tiered cakes, calculate each tier separately and add them up. A 6/8/10 inch tiered combination serves about 38 party portions, which covers most medium gatherings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many servings are in a 10 inch round cake?

A 10 inch round cake serves about 20 party slices (1.5 x 2 inches) or 30 wedding slices (1 x 2 inches). The difference is slice size: wedding servings are smaller. This calculator lets you pick which standard you want.

What is the difference between party and wedding servings?

Party servings are generous 1.5 x 2 inch slices. Wedding servings are 1 x 2 inch finger slices, the industry standard for tiered cakes. A cake that serves 20 at a party serves about 30 as wedding slices.

How do I cut a round cake for maximum servings?

Cut a circle 2 inches from the edge, slice the outer ring into pieces, then cut the inner circle into wedges. For tall cakes, slice horizontal layers first. A bench scraper and hot knife give the cleanest cuts.

How many servings do I need for 50 guests?

Plan for the guest count plus 10 percent extra, so about 55 servings. That usually means a 12 inch round plus an 8 inch round, or a half sheet cake. Enter your guest count and the calculator suggests cake sizes.

Do square cakes serve more than round cakes?

Yes, for the same nominal size. A 10 inch square has about 27 percent more area than a 10 inch round (100 vs 78.5 square inches), so it yields roughly a quarter more servings.
