β˜• Coffee Brew Ratio Calculator

Precise coffee and water for every brew method.

-g coffee

How to Use This Calculator

Pick a brew method or enter a custom ratio, then enter your water amount. You get coffee in grams plus a tablespoon estimate.

The Formula

Coffee (g) = water (g) / ratio
1 ml water = 1 g | 1 tbsp coffee ~ 10 g

Brew ratio is coffee mass to water mass. Because 1 ml of water weighs 1 gram, the math is simple in metric. Tablespoon conversions are approximate since grind and roast change density, which is why a scale is the single best coffee upgrade.

Worked Example

Pour over, 500 ml water, 1:16: coffee = 500 / 16 = 31.25 g, about 3 tablespoons. For two mugs, double both numbers and keep the ratio identical.

Dialing In Your Ratio

Start with the standard ratio for your method, then adjust to taste. If coffee tastes sour or weak, use more coffee (stronger ratio). If it tastes bitter or harsh, use less coffee or grind coarser. Change only one variable at a time so you know what fixed it. Keep notes; the difference between 1:15 and 1:16 is subtle but real once you taste them side by side.

Grind Size Matters as Much as Ratio

Ratio controls strength, but grind controls extraction. French press needs coarse grounds (sea salt texture) or it over-extracts and turns bitter. Espresso needs fine grounds or water rushes through and the shot tastes sour. If your ratio is right but flavor is off, grind size is the next thing to fix.

Weighing vs Scoops

A kitchen scale transforms coffee consistency because bean density varies by roast and origin. Two tablespoons of dark roast can weigh 30 percent less than two tablespoons of light roast. Weighing both coffee and water in grams removes all guesswork and makes your perfect cup repeatable every morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best coffee to water ratio?

A 1:16 ratio (1 gram coffee to 16 grams water) is the Specialty Coffee Association golden cup standard and a great starting point. Stronger tastes come from 1:14 to 1:15, lighter from 1:17. Espresso runs much tighter at 1:2.

How many grams of coffee for 500 ml of water?

At 1:16, 500 ml of water needs 31 grams of coffee (500 / 16). This calculator handles the division and converts to tablespoons if you do not have a scale, though weighing is far more accurate.

What ratio is best for French press?

French press shines at 1:14 to 1:15 because immersion brewing extracts evenly and the metal filter lets oils through. Go coarser on the grind and steep 4 minutes for a sweet, full cup.

How is cold brew ratio different?

Cold brew concentrate uses 1:4 to 1:5, then you dilute 1:1 with water or milk when serving. Ready-to-drink cold brew steeps at about 1:10 to 1:12. The long cold extraction needs the stronger ratio to taste right.

Should I measure coffee in grams or tablespoons?

Grams, always. A tablespoon of light-roast whole beans can weigh 30 percent more than dark-roast grounds, so volume measurements can swing your actual ratio from 1:14 to 1:18 without you knowing it. A basic kitchen scale costs little and lets you repeat a great cup exactly. Weigh both your coffee and your water for the most consistent results every morning.
