π Fondant Calculator
Right amount of fondant for a flawless cover.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter cake shape, size, and height, then pick your rolling thickness. You get ounces and pounds of fondant plus the circle diameter to roll.
The Formula
Volume = pi x (d/2)^2 x thickness | Weight = volume x 1.25 oz/cu in
Fondant covering is a circle whose diameter spans the top plus both sides plus trimming allowance. Rolled fondant weighs about 1.25 ounces per cubic inch. Square cakes use the diagonal-adjusted equivalent with extra for corners.
Worked Example
8 inch round, 4 inches tall, 1/8 inch thick: cover diameter = 8 + 8 + 2 = 18 inches. Volume = 3.1416 x 81 x 0.125 = 31.8 cu in. Weight = 31.8 x 1.25 = 40 oz. Buy a 2.5 lb package.
Rolling Tips
Roll fondant to about 1/8 inch thick on a surface dusted with powdered sugar or cornstarch. Too thick and it looks clumsy and tastes gummy; too thin and it tears over edges. Measure your rolled circle against the cake before lifting: it should extend past the base by twice the height plus 2 inches. Lift with the rolling pin, not your hands, to avoid stretching.
Smoothing Without Tears
Start smoothing from the top center outward, then work down the sides. Use a fondant smoother, not your hands, which leave fingerprints and heat marks. Small air bubbles can be pricked with a pin and smoothed. If the fondant cracks at the base edge, it was rolled too thin or the cake is too cold; let the cake warm slightly.
Covering in Humid Weather
Fondant and humidity are enemies; the surface gets sticky and tears easily. Work in air conditioning when possible and dust generously with cornstarch. If fondant sweats after application, leave it alone in a cool dry room rather than touching it; handling wet fondant makes marks permanent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much fondant do I need for an 8 inch cake?
An 8 inch round cake 4 inches tall needs about 24 ounces (1.5 pounds) of fondant rolled to 1/8 inch. This calculator adds a draping allowance so you have enough to trim.
What thickness should I roll fondant?
Roll to 1/8 inch (3 mm) for covering cakes. Thinner tears when draping, thicker tastes doughy and looks clumsy. Use spacers or guide rings for even thickness.
How do I calculate fondant for a square cake?
Square cakes need more fondant than round cakes of the same size because of the corners. The formula adds the side areas plus extra for corner folds. This calculator handles both shapes.
Can I reuse fondant trimmings?
Yes, if they stayed clean. Knead trimmings back into fresh fondant for practice or small decorations. Do not reuse trimmings that touched buttercream crumbs for covering a fresh cake.
How far ahead can I fondant a cake?
Fondant-covered cakes keep 2 to 3 days at room temperature. Do not refrigerate if you can avoid it; condensation makes fondant sticky and colors bleed. If you must chill, box the cake first.
