What Gets Converted
Headings h1 to h6 become # through ######. Paragraphs stay as paragraphs separated by blank lines. Bold and italic map to ** and *. Links become [text](url), images become . Unordered lists use dashes, ordered lists keep their numbers, and nested lists indent properly. Blockquotes get the > prefix, code blocks become fenced triple-backtick blocks, inline code gets single backticks, and horizontal rules become ---.
Tables convert to GitHub-flavored Markdown pipe tables with alignment preserved. Inline styles, classes, font tags, and span wrappers are stripped because Markdown has no styling layer. Script and style elements are dropped entirely for safety.
Why Convert HTML to Markdown
Documentation systems, static site generators, and README files all prefer Markdown: it is readable as plain text, diffs cleanly in git, and renders consistently. Migrating a WordPress site to Hugo or Jekyll, archiving web content as notes, and cleaning email HTML for tickets are the classic use cases. Markdown's simplicity is the point: if the HTML needs complex layout, Markdown is the wrong target.
Worked Example
Paste <h2>Features</h2><ul><li>Fast</li><li>Free</li></ul> and the converter outputs "## Features" followed by "- Fast" and "- Free". A linked heading like <h3><a href="/x">Title</a></h3> becomes "### [Title](/x)", preserving both the heading level and the link.
Limitations
Complex layouts (multi-column divs, positioned elements, forms, iframes) have no Markdown equivalent and are flattened to their text content. Deeply nested tables may render imperfectly. Very large documents (megabytes of HTML) can be slow because the conversion walks the entire DOM tree. For those cases, convert in sections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why convert HTML to Markdown?
Markdown is plain-text readable, diffs cleanly in version control, and is the standard for READMEs, docs, and static sites. Converting HTML to Markdown is the fastest way to migrate content into those systems.
Does it preserve links and images?
Yes. Links become [text](url) and images become . Inline styles and tracking attributes are stripped, keeping only the destination URLs.
What happens to tables?
Tables convert to GitHub-flavored Markdown pipe tables with header alignment preserved. Very complex nested tables may need manual cleanup.
Is my HTML uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the DOM parser. Nothing leaves your computer, so private content stays private.
Can it handle entire web pages?
Yes, but with caveats. Navigation, ads, and scripts are stripped, leaving article content. For best results, copy just the article HTML rather than the whole page source.
