πŸͺ΅ Flooring Calculator

Calculate square footage and boxes for hardwood, laminate, or vinyl flooring.

Total Area (with waste)

How to Use This Calculator

Add each room or area separately, then set the waste percentage and the coverage per box (found on the product label). Enter the price per box if you want a material cost estimate. The calculator gives you total square footage, boxes needed, and total cost.

1

Measure each room at its widest points, including closets and alcoves. Rooms are rarely perfectly rectangular, so measure both directions at the longest span.

2

Click "Add Another Room" for each additional space. The calculator sums all rooms automatically.

3

Set your waste factor. Use 10% for straight layouts. Use 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Complex rooms with many corners or angled walls may need 20%.

4

Enter the box coverage in square feet. Most laminate and LVP boxes cover 20 to 30 sq ft each. This number is printed on every box.

Flooring Area Formula

Area = Length Γ— Width (for each room) Total area = Sum of all room areas Total with waste = Total area Γ— (1 + waste% Γ· 100) Boxes = ⌈Total with waste Γ· sq ft per boxβŒ‰ Cost = Boxes Γ— price per box

If a box covers 22.6 sq ft and you need 350 sq ft with waste, that is 16 boxes (350 Γ· 22.6 = 15.5, rounded up to 16). Always round up. You cannot buy a fraction of a box, and having one extra box is far better than being short at the end of the last room.

Example Projects

12x14 ft bedroom, 10% waste, 22.6 sq ft/box9 boxes
3-room project: 12x14, 10x12, 8x10, 10% waste24 boxes
20x24 ft open floor plan, 10% waste24 boxes (22.6 sq ft/box)
Whole house: 1,200 sq ft, 10% waste59 boxes (22.6 sq ft/box)

Tips for Your Project

Acclimate your flooring before installation. Laminate and engineered hardwood need 48 hours in the room they will be installed in, lying flat in the boxes, to adjust to the temperature and humidity. Skipping this step leads to expansion gaps or buckling after installation. Solid hardwood can take up to a week to fully acclimate.

When buying flooring, check the lot number on every box and make sure all boxes are from the same lot. Manufacturers can have slight color differences between production runs. If your project requires boxes from two lots, plan the lot change at a transition strip between rooms rather than in the middle of an open floor where the color shift will be obvious.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate flooring needed?

Measure the room in feet, multiply length Γ— width for square footage. Add 10% waste for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns.

How are flooring boxes sold?

Flooring is sold by the box, with each box covering a set number of square feet (usually 20–30 sq ft for planks). Divide total sq ft by coverage per box.

How much should I add for waste?

Straight layout: 10%. Diagonal (45Β°) layout: 15%. Complex rooms with many cuts: 15–20%.

Should I include closets in my measurement?

Yes, closets require flooring. Add all areas including closets, alcoves, and hallways connected to the room.

How do I measure an L-shaped room?

Divide it into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add them together.
