How to Use This Reading Time Calculator
Paste any text and the word count updates live as you type. Choose a reading speed that matches you, and the tool estimates reading time plus speaking time at 150 words per minute. Prefer numbers? Type a word count directly instead.
Paste your text into the box, or type a word count in the number field.
Pick a reading speed: slow (200 WPM), average (250 WPM), fast (300 WPM), or enter your own custom speed.
Read the estimate: reading time in hours and minutes, speaking time, and word and sentence counts.
Use the speaking time for speeches, presentations, and video scripts to stay within your time slot.
How Reading Time Is Calculated
The math is simple division. What makes it useful is matching the speed to the reader. Silent reading averages 200 to 250 words per minute for most adults, so 250 is the default. Technical or academic text is read more slowly, around 150 to 200, while light fiction can run 300 or more. Speaking is a separate pace entirely: most people talk at about 150 words per minute, which is why a speech always takes longer than the same text takes to read.
Worked Example
A 1,000 word article at the average speed of 250 WPM takes 1,000 / 250 = 4 minutes to read. The same 1,000 words spoken at 150 WPM take 1,000 / 150 = 6.7 minutes, or about 6 minutes 40 seconds. That is why a 5 minute presentation slot fits roughly 750 spoken words, and a 10 minute slot fits about 1,500. Writers use this in reverse too: need a 3 minute video script? Aim for about 450 words.
Choosing the Right Reading Speed
Pick the speed honestly and the estimate will be close. If you are timing content for a general audience, 200 to 225 WPM is the safe range: it covers slower readers and dense topics. For your own study planning, time yourself on a page of typical material once and use that number as your custom speed. Bloggers often show reading time badges on posts using 200 to 250 WPM, which sets expectations before a reader starts. Remember that reading time assumes continuous reading; skimming, re-reading, and interruptions all add real minutes that no formula can predict.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is reading time calculated?
The tool counts the words in your text and divides by your reading speed in words per minute. At 250 words per minute, a 1,000 word article takes 4 minutes to read. Paste the text directly, or type a word count if you already know it.
What is the average reading speed?
For silent reading, studies put the average adult speed around 200 to 250 words per minute for typical nonfiction. Speed readers claim 400 or more, but comprehension drops at very high speeds. This calculator defaults to 250 and lets you pick 200, 300, or a custom speed.
Why is speaking time longer than reading time?
People speak more slowly than they read silently. Average conversational speech runs about 150 words per minute, and presenters often slow to 120 to 130. The calculator shows a separate speaking time at 150 WPM, which is useful for speeches, presentations, and video scripts.
How many words are in a 5 minute speech?
At 150 words per minute, a 5 minute speech is about 750 words. A 10 minute presentation is around 1,500 words. Write your script, paste it here, and check the speaking time to stay within your slot.
Does the word count include headings and captions?
The tool counts every word you paste, including headings, captions, and lists. If you want the reading time for body text only, paste just that text. For a published article, pasting the full page may include navigation and footer words, so trimming first gives a cleaner estimate.
