CPM Calculator
Impression cost, comparable across every channel.
Cost per thousand impressions
Estimates for planning only, not financial advice.
CPM prices attention: what 1,000 impressions cost. Spend $500 for 200,000 impressions and the CPM is $2.50. Enter any campaign\'s spend and impressions to get its CPM, then adjust for viewability and translate to effective CPC with your click-through rate. At 70% viewability, that $2.50 CPM is really $3.57 per thousand viewed impressions, and at 1% CTR it equals a $0.25 effective CPC. This calculator keeps every comparison honest.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter total ad spend and total impressions from the campaign report. Add your click-through rate to see the effective CPC translation, and the measured viewability rate to see the viewed-impression cost. The results give CPM, viewed CPM, effective CPC, and total clicks, the four numbers that let any impression buy be compared against any click buy.
Enter spend and impressions from the same report and date range.
Add CTR and viewability to translate into CPC and viewed-impression terms.
Compare viewed CPMs across channels, not raw CPMs. Judge against conversion results, not in isolation.
The CPM Formulas
Viewability is the adjustment most buyers skip and most need. Display viewability of 50% to 70% is typical, which means raw CPMs understate true exposure cost by 30% to 100%. The effective CPC translation then connects impression pricing to performance thinking: a $2.50 CPM at 1% CTR is a $0.25 effective CPC, which reframes "expensive" CPMs on high-CTR placements as bargains.
Worked Example
A brand campaign spends $500 and delivers 200,000 impressions: CPM is $2.50. Measured viewability is 70%, so viewed CPM is $2.50 / 0.70 = $3.57. CTR is 1%, giving an effective CPC of ($2.50/1000)/0.01 = $0.25. Total clicks: 2,000. Compare against a direct CPC buy at $0.40: the CPM route delivers clicks at $0.25 equivalent, 37.5% cheaper, assuming the clicks are of equal quality. If the CPM clicks convert half as well (common with broad display vs search intent), the effective cost per conversion equalizes, which is why the funnel math must follow the CPM math.
Typical CPM Ranges
| Channel | Typical CPM | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Programmatic display | $2 to $5 | Broad reach, variable quality |
| Social feed ads | $8 to $15 | Targeting precision included |
| Online video | $20 to $40 | High attention, completion rates |
| Niche B2B | $30 to $60+ | Small, valuable audiences |
Never buy on CPM alone: pair it with a conversion or brand-lift read, because the cheapest impressions are worthless if nobody acts. Fraud and invalid traffic concentrate in the cheapest inventory, so treat below-market CPMs as a quality warning, not a bargain. For the full media math stack, our CPC vs CPM calculator translates between pricing models, our CTR calculator benchmarks click rates, and our CPA calculator carries impressions through to acquisition cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is CPM?
CPM is cost per mille, the price of 1,000 ad impressions: (total cost / impressions) x 1000. Spend $500 for 200,000 impressions and your CPM is $2.50. It is the standard currency for brand advertising, where the goal is being seen rather than clicked.
What is the CPM formula?
CPM = (ad spend / total impressions) x 1000. The 1,000 normalizes campaigns of different sizes: a $50 test and a $50,000 flight become comparable per-thousand rates. Invert it to plan budgets: spend = CPM x impressions / 1000.
What is a good CPM?
It depends on the channel and targeting. Broad display runs $2 to $5, targeted social $8 to $15, premium video $20 to $40+, and niche B2B placements can exceed $50. "Good" means cheap relative to the audience quality and your goal: a $30 CPM reaching exact buyers beats a $3 CPM reaching nobody relevant. Compare within channel and audience, never across wildly different media.
Why is my CPM so high?
Narrow targeting, premium placements, competitive auctions, small budgets (less optimization data), and high-demand seasons (Q4 retail) all raise CPMs. A $40 CPM on hyper-targeted decision-makers can still be efficient if the conversion math works. Diagnose high CPM against results: expensive impressions that convert are fine; expensive impressions that do not are the problem.
What is the difference between CPM and eCPM?
CPM is the quoted or paid rate per thousand impressions. eCPM (effective CPM) is any campaign's cost restated per thousand impressions: (spend / impressions) x 1000, regardless of pricing model. A CPC campaign's eCPM lets you compare it against CPM quotes directly. Our CPC vs CPM calculator runs that translation.
How does CPM relate to CPC?
Through click-through rate: eCPM = CPC x CTR x 1000. A $2 CPC at 1% CTR is a $20 eCPM. High-CTR campaigns look expensive on CPC and cheap on CPM; low-CTR campaigns reverse it. This is why retargeting (high CTR) usually belongs on CPM and prospecting (uncertain CTR) on CPC.
What is vCPM and when should I use it?
Viewable CPM charges only for impressions meeting viewability standards (about 50% of pixels visible for 1+ seconds on display). It costs more per thousand but guarantees the ads were actually seen. Use it for brand campaigns where exposure is the objective; for performance campaigns measured on clicks and conversions, standard metrics usually suffice.
Do ad blockers affect CPM?
They reduce measurable impressions, which can inflate reported CPMs on affected inventory and push spend toward walled gardens with less blocking. Most ad servers count only served impressions, so blocked ads never enter the denominator. The strategic effect matters more than the math: audiences heavy with ad-block users are reached better through creators, sponsorships, or other formats.
How do I lower my CPM?
Broaden targeting (less competition per impression), use less premium placements, improve relevance scores (platforms discount engaging ads), shift budget to cheaper channels or geos, avoid Q4 peaks if timing is flexible, and increase budget to give algorithms optimization room. But never chase cheap CPMs into junk inventory: a $1 CPM on fraudulent or invisible impressions is infinitely expensive per real view.
How much budget do I need for a CPM campaign?
Enough impressions for statistical meaning: at minimum, several thousand impressions per creative variant to read CTR and conversion differences. For a $10 CPM test with 3 variants, budget at least $300 to $500 for a directional read. Brand-lift studies need far more. Underfunded tests produce noise that looks like insight.
