๐งฎ Price Quantity Calculator
Unit price times quantity, with bulk discounts.
Total cost for the quantity
Estimates for planning only, not financial advice.
Total price is unit price times quantity, minus any bulk discount: the arithmetic behind every quote, order, and invoice. At $4.50 each for 240 units with a 10 percent volume discount, the subtotal is $1,080, the discount $108, and the total $972. The effective unit price falls to $4.05. Simple math, but getting it right on every line of a long quote is where errors creep in.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the per-unit price, the quantity, and any bulk discount percent. The calculator shows the subtotal, the discount amount, the effective per-unit price after discount, and the final total.
Enter unit price and quantity. Keep units consistent: price per box with quantity in boxes.
Add the bulk discount if the supplier offers tiered pricing at your volume.
Read the total and effective unit price. For comparing two suppliers' deals, our unit price calculator ranks them.
The Price Quantity Formula
Discounts usually apply to the subtotal before tax and shipping, so compute this first, then layer tax and freight on the discounted total. Tiered pricing (different rates at different quantity bands) needs a per-tier calculation; this tool handles the common single-rate-plus-discount case.
Worked Example
240 widgets at $4.50: subtotal $1,080. A 10 percent volume discount saves $108. Total: $972. Effective unit price: $4.05. If the next tier at 500 units offers 15 percent, the total would be 500 x $4.50 x 0.85 = $1,912.50, or $3.83 per unit: worth it only if you will actually use 500.
Reading Your Result
Judge bulk deals by effective unit price against your real consumption. A lower per-unit price on twice the quantity is a loss if half expires, spoils, or sits in storage costing money. The break-even question is always: will we use it before it costs more to hold than it saved?
My rule: compute the carrying cost before chasing the discount. Inventory ties up cash, needs space, and risks obsolescence. A 10 percent discount paid for with six months of storage and a cash crunch is not a discount. Buy the quantity you will use in a sensible cycle, take the discount tier that matches, and leave the heroic tier for someone with a warehouse. For the tax layer on top of the total, our sales tax calculator adds it correctly.
The effective unit price is the number that matters in every negotiation. Suppliers quote list prices, tier discounts, rebates, and freight separately precisely because the blended number is harder to compare. Reduce every quote to total landed cost divided by usable units before deciding. The supplier with the lowest list price frequently has the highest effective price.
Bulk discounts have a dark side: carrying cost. Inventory sitting in a warehouse costs roughly 20 percent of its value per year in capital, storage, insurance, and obsolescence. A 10 percent bulk discount on a year's supply of a slow-moving item is a loss disguised as a deal. Buy the discount only when turnover justifies the stock.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate total price from unit price and quantity?
Multiply unit price by quantity, then subtract any discount. 240 units at $4.50 with 10% off: $1,080 subtotal minus $108 discount = $972 total. Quote the math on the invoice: 240 x $4.50 - 10% = $972 leaves no room for dispute.
What is effective unit price?
The total paid divided by quantity: what each unit really cost after discounts. $972 / 240 = $4.05 per unit. It is the right number for comparing suppliers with different discount structures. Use effective unit price in purchase orders: it is the only number that compares cleanly.
How do tiered bulk discounts work?
Different discount rates apply at different quantity bands, for example 5% over 100 units and 10% over 500. Compute each tier's quantity at its rate and sum, or negotiate a flat rate at your volume. Marginal-tier structures (discount only on units above the threshold) are fairer than all-unit tiers.
Should I always buy the bigger quantity for the discount?
Only if you will use it. Compare the effective unit price against storage costs, spoilage risk, and the cash tied up. A discount that doubles inventory of a slow mover is usually a mistake. Compute the carrying cost: inventory at 20 percent annual carrying cost eats discounts fast.
Does sales tax apply before or after the discount?
After, in most states: tax applies to the discounted selling price. Compute the discount first, then apply tax to the reduced total. A few states tax the pre-discount price on manufacturer rebates: read the fine print before quoting the customer.
How do I quote a client with quantity pricing?
Show the unit price, quantity, discount percent, and total on separate lines. Transparency prevents disputes and makes your quote comparable to competitors'. Itemize every line: clients compare quotes line by line, and lump-sum quotes lose to transparent ones almost every time.
What is the difference between a discount and a rebate?
A discount reduces the invoice price now; a rebate returns money later, often after conditions are met. Discounts help cash flow immediately; rebates require tracking and patience. Rebates over $600 may trigger 1099 reporting: discounts never do, another reason to prefer them.
How do I handle price breaks in a spreadsheet?
Use a lookup table of quantity thresholds to rates rather than nested IFs. Keep unit price, quantity, and discount in separate columns so each can be audited independently. VLOOKUP with TRUE (approximate match) handles tier tables in one clean formula.
What is MOQ and how does it relate?
Minimum order quantity: the smallest order a supplier accepts, often tied to the first discount tier. If the MOQ exceeds your needs, the effective unit price includes waste. Negotiate the MOQ down with a higher unit price: the blended cost often still wins.
Can I negotiate beyond the published tiers?
Yes, especially at large volumes or with competing quotes in hand. Suppliers often have unpublished tiers; asking costs nothing and the effective unit price is your negotiating anchor. Get competing quotes in writing: a forwarded PDF beats a verbal 'they offered less'.
