What VO2 Max Measures

VO2 max is the maximum milliliters of oxygen your body can use per kilogram per minute: the single best number for cardiorespiratory fitness and one of the strongest predictors of longevity in exercise science. Lab tests measure it with a mask on a treadmill, but two field methods get close. The resting heart rate method uses the Uth-Sorensen-Overgaard ratio: VO2 max = 15 x (max HR / resting HR). The 1.5-mile method uses the Cooper-style formula: VO2 max = 483 / time in minutes + 3.5. Pick whichever inputs you have.

If you do not know your max heart rate, the calculator estimates it as 208 - 0.7 x age, the Tanaka formula researchers prefer over 220-minus-age. Measure resting HR first thing in the morning, lying still, for the honest number: an evening reading after coffee runs 5 to 10 beats high and sinks your estimate.

Reading Your Score

Ratings shift with age and sex because VO2 max declines about 1 percent per year after 30. For a 35-year-old man, above 52 is excellent, 43 to 52 good, 35 to 42 fair; for a 35-year-old woman, above 45 excellent, 38 to 45 good, 30 to 37 fair. The calculator places your score on the age-adjusted scale and converts it to a fitness age: the age whose average matches your score. A fitness age below your real age is the goal.

Raising It

VO2 max responds fast: 4 to 8 weeks of intervals can lift it 10 to 15 percent. The proven recipe is 2 to 3 weekly sessions of 3 to 5 minute hard intervals with equal recovery, plus easy base mileage. It also falls fast: two weeks of detraining costs about 7 percent. Retest monthly under the same conditions and watch the trend, not single readings. Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good VO2 max?

It depends on age and sex. For a 35-year-old man, above 52 is excellent; for a woman the same age, above 45. VO2 max falls about 1 percent per year after 30, so compare against your age group, not twenty-year-olds.

How accurate is the resting heart rate method?

Within about 10 percent for most people. It assumes a standard relationship between heart rate ratio and oxygen use. Morning measurements, honest max HR, and no caffeine give the best estimate.

What is 220 minus age for max heart rate?

An outdated rough formula. The Tanaka equation (208 - 0.7 x age) fits measured data better and is what this calculator uses when you skip the max HR field.

How fast can I improve VO2 max?

Noticeably in 4 to 8 weeks: 10 to 15 percent gains are typical with 2 to 3 weekly interval sessions. It detrains just as fast, so consistency matters more than heroic single workouts.

Does a high VO2 max mean I will live longer?

It is one of the strongest fitness predictors of longevity in cohort studies, stronger than cholesterol or blood pressure in some analyses. Cardio fitness is a genuine health asset, not just a sports metric.
