Estimated Moving Boxes
How to Use This Calculator
This calculator turns your bedroom count into a complete packing shopping list: how many boxes of each size, how many tape rolls, how much bubble wrap, and what it all costs. Pick your bedroom count and, if you know it, add your square footage for a tighter estimate.
Choose your Bedrooms: Studio, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5+ Bedrooms. This sets the base box count that professional movers use as a starting point.
Optionally enter your Home Size in square feet. A large 2-bedroom with a garage needs more boxes than a tiny one, so the estimate scales with your actual space when you provide it.
Review the box breakdown. Medium boxes are the workhorses (about 40 percent), with small, large, and wardrobe boxes splitting the rest.
Buy the supplies. Add the tape rolls, bubble wrap, and cost estimate to your moving budget, then order boxes a week or two before packing day.
The Mover Heuristics Behind the Numbers
These are the standard rules of thumb moving companies use when quoting supplies. The square-footage adjustment matters because a minimalist studio and a hoarder studio are very different packing jobs. Typical square footage per bedroom count is 450 for a studio, 750 for 1br, 1050 for 2br, 1450 for 3br, 1900 for 4br, and 2300 for 5br. If your place is much bigger or smaller than typical, the multiplier adjusts the count, but it never goes below 0.6x or above 1.6x so one unusual input cannot blow up the estimate.
Worked Example
Take a 3-bedroom home with no square footage entered. Base boxes = 60. Small = 25 percent of 60 = 15 boxes. Medium = 40 percent of 60 = 24 boxes. Large = 25 percent of 60 = 15 boxes. Wardrobe = 10 percent of 60 = 6 boxes. Tape = 60 / 15 = 4 rolls. Bubble wrap = 4 rolls x 150 ft = 600 ft. Cost: 15 small x $1.50 = $22.50, 24 medium x $2.50 = $60.00, 15 large x $3.50 = $52.50, 6 wardrobe x $12 = $72.00, 4 tape rolls x $4 = $16, 4 bubble wrap rolls x $20 = $80. Total = $303. So a typical 3-bedroom move needs 60 boxes and about $300 in supplies.
Packing Tips That Save Real Money
Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones: a large box full of books will break your back and the box. Use wardrobe boxes for clothes on hangers so you skip the ironing at the new place. Wrap dishes in packing paper, not newspaper, unless you enjoy washing ink off every plate. Tape every box twice on the bottom seam. Label two sides and the top with the room and a one-word contents hint. And start collecting boxes at least two weeks out: last-minute box shopping at full retail price is how $200 budgets become $400 budgets.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many boxes do I need for a 2-bedroom home?
Plan on about 45 boxes for a typical 2-bedroom home: roughly 11 small, 18 medium, 11 large, and 4 to 5 wardrobe boxes. That assumes average furnishings and normal clutter. If you own a lot of books, dishes, or a packed garage, add 10 to 15 percent on top.
What are the standard moving box sizes?
Small boxes are about 16x12x12 in and are best for heavy items like books, canned goods, and tools. Medium boxes (about 18x18x16 in) are the all-rounders for kitchen items, toys, and decor. Large boxes (about 24x18x18 in) suit bulky but light things like bedding and pillows. Wardrobe boxes (about 24x24x40 in) have a hanging bar so clothes go straight from closet to box.
How much packing tape do I need for a move?
A good rule is one roll of packing tape for every 15 boxes. A roll usually seals 30 to 40 boxes if you only tape the seams once, but two strips on the bottom seam of every box plus reinforcement on heavy boxes eats through tape fast. Buy a few extra rolls: running out mid-pack is the most common moving headache.
Should I buy new boxes or use free ones?
Free boxes from grocery or liquor stores work fine for light, non-fragile stuff, but they vary in size and crush strength. For dishes, glassware, electronics, and anything heavy, buy new boxes with a consistent size and known strength rating. New boxes also stack neatly in the truck, which means fewer crushed loads and a faster unload.
How much does it cost to buy boxes for a move?
Roughly $150 to $400 depending on home size. Small boxes run about $1.50 each, medium $2.50, large $3.50, and wardrobe boxes about $12. Add $4 per tape roll and about $20 per 150-ft roll of bubble wrap. This calculator totals it all up for your bedroom count.
