πŸ”„ Image Format Converter

Convert between JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP entirely in your browser.

How to Use This Image Converter

Upload any image, pick the format you want, adjust quality if you chose JPG or WebP, and hit Convert Image. A preview appears with the original and converted file sizes so you can compare, and a download button gives you the new file instantly. The whole process runs on your device: no waiting for uploads, no queues, no accounts.

1

Click Choose an image and select a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, or BMP file from your device.

2

Pick the target format from the dropdown. For photos choose JPG or WebP; for graphics with transparency choose PNG.

3

Set quality for JPG or WebP. Higher values look better but make bigger files. 90 is a great default for photos.

4

Click Convert Image, compare the file sizes, then download your converted file.

Choosing the Right Format

Every format is a tradeoff between file size, quality, and features. JPG is the universal photo format: tiny files and universal support, but lossy and no transparency. PNG is lossless with full transparency, perfect for logos, screenshots, and interface graphics, though photos become large. WebP is the modern best-of-both: lossy or lossless modes, transparency, and files noticeably smaller than JPG at equal quality, supported by all current browsers. GIF is limited to 256 colors but supports simple animation; converting a still photo to GIF is rarely ideal. BMP is uncompressed and huge, useful mainly for legacy Windows software. A practical rule: photos for the web go to WebP or JPG, graphics with text or transparency go to PNG, and everything else is a special case.

What Happens During Conversion

Your browser decodes the uploaded file into raw pixels, then re-encodes those pixels in the new format. Converting from a lossy format to another lossy format (JPG to WebP) recompresses already-compressed data, so keep quality high to avoid compounding artifacts. Converting lossy to lossless (JPG to PNG) preserves the current pixels exactly but cannot restore detail the JPG already discarded, and the file will be much bigger. Transparency survives only when both the source and target support an alpha channel: PNG to WebP keeps it, PNG to JPG replaces it with white. Color profiles are generally preserved as sRGB. Because conversion is local, even very large images process in seconds, limited only by your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which image formats can I convert between?

This tool converts between JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and BMP. Upload any of these formats and export to any other. Note that converting a photo to GIF reduces it to 256 colors, which can band smooth gradients, while converting a transparent PNG to JPG fills transparent areas with white because JPG has no alpha channel.

Will converting change my image quality?

It depends on the target format. JPG and WebP are lossy, so some detail is discarded to shrink the file; the quality slider lets you balance size against fidelity, and 85 to 92 is a sweet spot for photos. PNG and BMP are lossless, so converting to them preserves every pixel exactly, though files get larger.

Why convert images to WebP?

WebP typically produces files 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at similar visual quality, which makes pages load faster and saves bandwidth. It also supports transparency like PNG. Most modern browsers, phones, and social platforms accept WebP, so it is an excellent default for web publishing.

Does my image get uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens locally in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device, which keeps private photos private and means the tool works even on slow connections. Nothing is stored, logged, or transmitted anywhere, so you can convert freely without worry.

What is the difference between JPG and PNG?

JPG uses lossy compression tuned for photographs: small files, no transparency. PNG uses lossless compression: perfect quality and full transparency, but larger files. Use JPG for photos on the web, PNG for logos, screenshots, and graphics with text or sharp edges where artifacts would show.

Can I convert HEIC photos from my iPhone?

Browsers cannot decode HEIC directly, so this tool cannot open iPhone HEIC files as-is. On iPhone, go to Settings, Camera, Formats, and choose Most Compatible to shoot JPG instead, or export the photo as JPG from the Photos app before converting it here.
