Your Hat Size
How to Use This Hat Size Calculator
Hat sizes are just head circumference divided by pi, which means one measurement gives you US, UK, and EU sizes. Measure your head, enter it, and get all three.
Wrap a soft tape around your head, half an inch above eyebrows and ears, where a hat sits.
Keep the tape level and snug. Measure twice and enter the larger number in inches or cm.
Hit Find My Hat Size. You get US size to the nearest eighth, plus UK and EU equivalents.
Between sizes? Round up. Sizing tape inside the sweatband fixes a slightly loose hat.
The Formula
The US system is literal: a size 7 1/4 hat fits a head whose circumference divided by pi is 7.25, i.e. about 22.8 inches. EU sizing skips the math and uses centimeters directly. Sizes round to the nearest eighth of an inch in the US system, which is why 7.32 becomes 7 3/8 (7.375) rather than 7 1/4 (7.25).
Worked Example
Head measures 23 inches. US size = 23 / 3.1416 = 7.32. The nearest eighth: 7 1/4 is 7.25, 7 3/8 is 7.375, and 7.32 sits closer to 7.375, so the size is 7 3/8. In centimeters, 23 inches is 58.4 cm, giving EU 58 (some charts say 59). UK matches US at this size: 7 3/8. One measurement, three systems, no chart lookup needed.
Fitted vs Adjustable
Fitted hats come in exact sizes like 7 3/8 and look cleanest, but they demand an accurate measurement. Adjustable caps with straps cover a range, usually S/M and L/XL, and forgive sloppy measuring. Snapbacks fit most adults. If you wear your hair differently sometimes, like a bun or braids, measure with the hair as you will wear it under the hat; the difference can be half a size.
Fit Tips Worth Knowing
Hat Size by Style
Different hats want different fits. Fedoras and wool hats sit on the crown and should match your measured size exactly. Beanies stretch, so buy your size or one down for a snug fit. Baseball caps are mostly adjustable; fitted versions follow the same chart. Cowboy hats run large to sit higher on the head, and many wearers go an eighth up. Hard hats and helmets use their own sizing, so do not assume your fedora size transfers.
Fit Tips Worth Knowing
A new fitted hat should feel slightly snug; wool felt relaxes about an eighth with wear. The hat should sit about a finger\'s width above the eyebrows and not touch the tops of the ears. If it leaves a red line after an hour, it is too small. Foam sizing tape behind the sweatband shrinks a loose hat by up to a quarter size invisibly. And heads are not perfectly round: oval heads sometimes need long-oval models, which specialty hat shops stock.
A Second Worked Example: The Centimeters Path
Head measures 58 cm. EU size: 58 directly. In inches: 58 divided by 2.54 is 22.83. US size: 22.83 divided by pi is 7.27, nearest eighth is 7 1/4 (7.25). UK: same 7 1/4 at this size. One measurement, three systems, and the EU path needed no math at all. This is why ordering from European makers is simpler: centimeters are the size.
The centimeters path also settles between-size debates. At 58.4 cm you are EU 58; at 58.9 the charts start saying 59. When the tape reads between, round up and use sizing tape inside the sweatband. A slightly loose hat is adjustable; a tight one is a headache, literally.
Hat Styles and How They Fit
Different hats fit differently by design. Fedoras and dress hats are fitted: exact size, worn level, about a finger above the eyebrows. Beanies and knit caps stretch to fit, one size covering a wide range; they are the safe gift. Baseball caps adjust with straps, forgiving everything except very small or very large heads.
Cowboy hats add a shape variable: heads are oval, and hats come in round and oval shapes. An oval head in a round hat gets pressure points at front and back; hat shops steam and stretch to match. Bucket hats and sun hats run casual and slightly loose by design. Match the measuring care to the hat: fitted demands the tape, adjustable forgives the guess.
Common Hat-Sizing Mistakes
First: measuring over bulky hair wrong. Measure with hair as you will wear it under the hat; a bun adds half a size, and the hat must fit the hair too. Second: the tilt error. The tape must sit level, half an inch above eyebrows and ears; tilting it up at the back shrinks the reading and the hat.
Third: pulling the tape too tight. Snug, not strangling; a tight measurement buys a tight hat. Fourth: ignoring the break-in. Leather sweatbands ease slightly with wear; a new fitted hat should be snug but not painful. Fifth: one measurement, one order, no check. Measure twice, buy once, especially for fitted hats over fifty dollars. The tape is free; the return shipping is not.
Worked Example: The 23-Inch Head
A head measuring 23 inches around: 23 / 3.1416 = 7.32, which rounds to US size 7 3/8. In metric that is 58.4 cm (23 Γ 2.54), and in UK sizing it is also 7 3/8 (the UK uses the same scale as the US for most hats). If the measurement falls between, say 22 3/4 inches (7.24), size up to 7 1/4 rather than down: a slightly loose hat can take a sizing strip, but a tight one gives headaches.
Measure twice on different days, in the evening. Morning heads run slightly smaller, and hair volume changes the number: measure over the hair you will wear under the hat. For a winter beanie over thick hair vs. a summer cap over a buzz cut, you may genuinely need two sizes. The tape should sit where the hat will: about an inch above the eyebrows, level all around.
Why Hat Sizes Are Fractions
US hat sizes are fractions because they are literally head circumference divided by pi. A 22-inch head gives exactly 7; a 23-inch head gives 7.32, expressed as 7 3/8. The eighths are not arbitrary: each eighth is about 0.39 inches of circumference, roughly 1 cm, which is the smallest difference most people can feel. Finer gradations would be false precision.
This is also why fitted caps come in eighths while snapbacks do not bother: a fitted cap has no adjustment, so it must land within an eighth. Adjustable hats cover a full size or more with their strap, which is why "one size fits most" works at all. If you are between eighths on a fitted cap, the larger size plus a strip of foam sizing tape beats the smaller size every time.
US vs. UK vs. Metric Sizing Compared
US and UK hat sizes share the same fractional scale (7 1/4 means the same in both), which confuses nobody until you hit metric. Metric sizing is just centimeters of circumference: 58 cm, 59 cm, and so on. The conversion is direct: US 7 1/4 = 57.8 cm β 58. European brands often label in cm only, so convert before ordering.
Watch out for brand-specific "S/M/L" scales, which are not standardized at all. One brand's L is 7 1/4, another's is 7 1/2. Always check the brand's inch or cm chart and ignore the letter. Vintage hats add another wrinkle: felt shrinks over decades, so a vintage 7 1/4 may fit like a 7 1/8. For vintage, buy a quarter size up or budget for stretching.
Pro Tips for Buying Hats Online
Read the returns policy before the size chart. Even with perfect measurement, crown height and brim stiffness change how a hat feels, and you cannot judge those from numbers. Free returns turn online hat buying from a gamble into a fitting room.
For fitted baseball caps, know your brand: a 7 3/8 in New Era's 59FIFTY fits differently from a 7 3/8 in another maker's low-profile cap. Crown depth varies by model, and a shallow crown on a tall head feels tight regardless of the circumference number. When trying a new brand, order two adjacent sizes and return one.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I measure my head for a hat?
Wrap a soft tape around your head about half an inch above your eyebrows and ears, where the hat will sit. Keep it level and snug but not tight. Measure twice and use the larger number. Enter it above for your size.
What is a 7 1/4 hat size in inches?
About 22.8 inches of head circumference, since US hat size equals circumference divided by pi. A 7 1/4 is one of the most common men's sizes. The calculator converts either direction: inches to size or size to inches.
What is my hat size if my head is 23 inches?
23 divided by pi is 7.32, which rounds to 7 3/8. In EU sizing that is about 58 to 59 cm. Enter 23 above and the calculator gives US, UK, and EU sizes instantly.
Are US and UK hat sizes the same?
Nearly. UK sizes run about 1/8 smaller than US for sizes under 7, and match above that. In practice most size charts treat them as interchangeable. EU sizes are completely different: they are the centimeter circumference.
What is the average hat size for men?
About 7 1/4, or 23 inches of circumference. Women average around 7, or 22 inches. Children run much smaller, typically 6 1/2 to 6 3/4. Heads vary widely though, so always measure rather than assuming the average fits you.
Should a hat fit tight or loose?
Snug but comfortable: it should stay on in a light breeze without leaving a red mark. Fitted hats stretch slightly with wear, about 1/8 size. If you are between sizes, size up and use sizing tape inside.
What EU hat size is a US 7 1/2?
About 60 cm. Multiply the US size by pi to get inches (7.5 x 3.1416 = 23.56), then convert to centimeters (59.8). The calculator does this in both directions above.
Do hats stretch over time?
Slightly. Wool and cotton hats give about 1/8 size with wear; a hat stretcher can add a bit more. Straw and structured caps barely stretch. Buy the fit you want now rather than counting on stretch.
