Between Dates
How to Use This Day Counter
Pick any two dates and get the exact number of days between them, plus the same span expressed in weeks, months, and years. Leap years are handled automatically, so February 29 never breaks the count.
Enter the start date: a project kickoff, a birth date, or today.
Enter the end date: a deadline, an anniversary, or any future date.
Hit Count Days. You get total days, weeks, and approximate months.
Add 1 to the total if your context counts both endpoints inclusively.
The Method
The calculation converts both dates to timestamps and divides the difference by 86,400 seconds per day, which automatically accounts for leap years and varying month lengths. Counting excludes the start date, matching how durations work: a 7-day week starting Monday ends Sunday, 7 days later, not 8. Daylight saving shifts do not affect the count because the math uses calendar dates, not elapsed hours.
Worked Example
From January 1, 2025 to April 10, 2025: January contributes 30 days after the 1st, February 28, March 31, and April 9 days before the 10th, totaling 99 days. In weeks: 99 / 7 = 14 weeks and 1 day. In months: 99 / 30.44 = 3.25. Counting inclusively, January 1 through April 10, would be 100 days, which is why the famous 100-day challenges start counting on day one.
When Day Counts Matter
Legal deadlines run on exact days: a 30-day notice period, a 90-day warranty, a statute of limitations. Project plans convert durations to days for scheduling. Fitness challenges count 30, 75, or 100 days. Travel visas allow a fixed number of days per visit, and overstaying by even one day can mean fines or entry bans. In every case the exclusive count is standard, and being off by one can mean a missed deadline, so verify whether your context wants inclusive counting before you rely on the number.
Day Counts in History and Culture
Humans love round day counts. The 100-day mark opens many political honeymoons, 1,000 days marks serious streaks, and 10,000 days is about 27.4 years, a full adult chapter. NASA counts mission elapsed days, courts count speedy-trial days, and gardeners count days to maturity on seed packets. The 40-day and 40-night pattern recurs across traditions. Whatever you are counting, the psychology is the same: days feel achievable in a way years do not, which is why streaks, sobriety counters, and fitness challenges always count days instead of months.
Common Spans Worth Knowing
A quarter is 90 to 92 days depending on the months. A semester runs about 105 class days. A 40-year mortgage is 14,610 days including leap days. The 10,000-hour rule for mastery is about 417 full days of practice. A decade is 3,652 or 3,653 days depending on leap years. And 1,000 days is 2 years and 270-ish days, a popular milestone for streaks and sobriety counters. For anything irregular, the calculator beats mental math every time.
Worked Example: The 90-Day Probation
New hire starts March 2, 2026, with a 90-day probation. March contributes 29 days after the 2nd, April 30, May 31: 29 + 30 + 31 = 90, so probation ends May 31, 2026. In weeks: 90 / 7 = 12 weeks and 6 days. HR calendars the review for the first week of June, giving a few days of buffer.
Run the same 90 days from February 2, 2026: February contributes 26, March 31, April 30, leaving 3 days into May, so it ends May 3. Same 90 days, different end date, because the months differ. Probation letters should always name the end date explicitly instead of trusting everyone to count the same way.
Business Days vs. Calendar Days: The Costly Confusion
A 30-day payment term and a 30-business-day payment term differ by about 12 days, which is real money on a large invoice. Calendar days count every day including weekends and holidays. Business days skip weekends and public holidays, so 30 business days stretches across six calendar weeks.
Legal deadlines default to calendar days unless the document says business days, and missing the distinction has sunk court filings. Project plans usually run on business days, which is why a 90-day project starting in December finishes later than one starting in March: the holidays eat business days invisibly. When a deadline matters, ask which kind of day, then run the calculator on the exact dates.
The 40-Day Rule and Other Famous Counts
Certain day counts carry cultural weight. Lent runs 40 days, the traditional quarantine that gave the practice its name (quaranta giorni, forty days) ran 40, and new parents hear about the 100-day mark in several cultures as the end of the fragile newborn period. Project managers live by 30-60-90 plans. Knowing the exact day count turns these traditions from vague seasons into dated milestones you can plan around.
A Second Worked Example: The 90-Day Probation, Revisited
Ninety days from a March 1 start date: March has 31 days, so 30 remain after the 1st. April adds 30 (60), May 31 (91). That overshoots by one, so back up a day: 90 days from March 1 is May 30. The exclusive count is what HR systems use, which means the probation ends at the start of May 30, not the end. New hires celebrating on May 31 are a day late to their own party.
Now add the business-day wrinkle. Ninety calendar days contain about 64 business days, since 90 divided by 7 is 12.86 weeks and each week has 5 business days: 12.86 times 5 is 64.3. If the probation letter says "90 business days," that is 18 full work weeks, stretching the end date to about July 5, five weeks later than the calendar-day version. Always check which kind of days the policy means; the difference is a month of employment.
Counting Anniversaries: The Off-by-One Everyone Makes
The first anniversary of an event is the same calendar date one year later, and people still get the day count wrong constantly. A store opening on October 16, 2025 celebrates its first anniversary on October 16, 2026, exactly 365 days later, since the span crosses February 2026, which is not a leap year. The anniversary is the same calendar date, and the day count follows the calendar, not the other way around.
The trap is counting the start date as day one. If you start counting on October 16 itself as "day 1," your 365th day lands on October 15. Date calculators count exclusive of the start date: October 16 plus 365 days is October 16 of the next year. When someone's count disagrees with the calculator by exactly one, they counted the endpoint. It is always the endpoint.
Famous Day Counts Worth Knowing Cold
Some spans recur so often they are worth memorizing. A year is 365 days, 366 in a leap year. A quarter is about 91 days. One hundred days is 14 weeks and 2 days. A thousand days is 2 years, 8 months, and about 3 weeks, or 142 weeks and 6 days. Ten thousand days is 27.4 years, which is why the "10,000 days" milestone gets its own celebrations.
Institutions run on day counts: US tax day to extension deadlines, 90-day money-back guarantees, 30-day return windows, 7-day free trials. The 30-day window starting January 15 ends February 14: 16 days remain in January (the 16th through the 31st), leaving 14 days into February. Small spans deserve the same care as big ones; the arithmetic does not grade on a curve.
Day Counts in Contracts: Read the Definition
Contracts define "day" more carefully than friends do, and the definition controls the money. "Calendar days" means every day counts, weekends and holidays included. "Business days" usually means Monday through Friday excluding federal holidays, though some contracts exclude only listed holidays. "30 days after notice" starts counting the day after notice is received, not the day it is sent, which can add nearly a week with slow mail.
The expensive disputes are all about boundaries. A payment term of "net 30" from a January 31 invoice lands March 2 in a common year (28 days of February plus 2), and charging late fees on March 1 starts a fight. A lease ending "90 days after notice" given March 1 ends May 30, and the tenant who assumes May 31 owes a day of holdover. When the calculator and the contract disagree, the contract wins, but run the calculator first so you know what you are signing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the number of days between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later date. January 1 to April 10, 2025 is 99 days. Enter both dates above for the exact count plus weeks, months, and years. Leap years are handled automatically.
Do you count the start date or end date?
This calculator counts the days between the dates, not including the start date. January 1 to January 2 is 1 day. Some contexts count inclusively; add 1 if you need both endpoints counted.
How many days are between January 1 and December 31?
364 in a common year, 365 in a leap year. A full 365-day year is 364 days between its first and last day. The calculator handles leap years automatically, so February 29 is never miscounted.
What is 90 days from today?
About 3 months out. Enter today as the start date and count forward: the calculator shows the end date 90 days later. Useful for deadlines, warranties, trial periods, and 90-day fitness challenges.
How many days are in 6 months?
Between 181 and 184 depending on which months. Six calendar months from January 1 is 181 days in a common year; from July 1 it is 184. Enter real dates above for the exact number.
Can I count business days only?
This calculator counts calendar days. For business days, take the total, subtract 2 per full week, then adjust for holidays. A 30-day span holds about 22 business days, and a 90-day span about 65.
Why do date calculators disagree by one day?
Inclusive versus exclusive counting. Counting both endpoints adds 1 versus counting the gap. This tool counts the gap, the standard for durations. Add 1 if your context needs inclusive counting.
How many days until my birthday?
Enter today and your next birthday above, then hit Count Days. The calculator gives days, weeks, and months remaining. It works for any future date: holidays, weddings, vacations, and anniversaries too.
