π Secret Santa Generator
Fair, secret gift assignments with exclusion rules. No hat required.
Organizer view: share each line privately
How to Use the Secret Santa Generator
Enter everyone's name, add any exclusion pairs (couples, close friends), and draw. Each person is secretly assigned one recipient. Share each assignment privately.
List all participants, one per line. You need at least 3 people.
Add exclusions as pairs (Alex,Sam) so couples or close gift-swappers never draw each other.
Draw names, then DM each person only their own recipient. Keep the master list secret.
Setting Up a Great Exchange
Agree on three things before drawing: the budget, the date, and the rules. A $25 budget with a 3-week lead time works for most groups. Decide whether gag gifts are welcome or if it is heartfelt-only. Set a wish-list policy: many groups ask everyone to list 3 interests to make shopping easier without killing the surprise.
Draw early. Three to four weeks before the exchange gives everyone time to shop thoughtfully and accounts for shipping. Last-minute draws produce last-minute gifts, and everyone can tell.
Exclusion Rules Done Right
Exclusions exist to prevent awkwardness, not to engineer outcomes. Standard exclusions: couples (they already exchange), people who drew each other last year (optional tradition), and manager/employee pairs at work. Do not over-exclude: with 6 people and 3 exclusion pairs, a valid draw may be impossible. If the generator cannot find a valid assignment after many tries, loosen one exclusion.
Keeping the Secret
The organizer's discipline makes or breaks the secrecy. Never post the full assignment list in a group chat. Send each assignment as an individual message. If someone loses their assignment, the organizer re-sends just that one line. On exchange day, number the gifts and have people guess their Santa: the reveal is half the fun.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make sure nobody draws themselves?
The generator uses a derangement algorithm: it shuffles until every person is assigned someone else. Self-draws are mathematically impossible in the output. If anyone reports drawing themselves, re-run the generator.
Can I prevent couples from drawing each other?
Yes. Enter exclusion pairs (one per line, like "Alex,Sam") and the generator will never assign those two to each other. Use it for couples, close friends who already exchange gifts, or managers and direct reports.
What is a good Secret Santa budget?
$20 to $30 is the sweet spot for friends and coworkers: enough for something nice, low enough that nobody stresses. Set the budget before drawing names and put it in the invitation. The number matters less than everyone agreeing.
How do I share results without spoiling the secret?
The organizer sees all assignments. Message each person privately with only their assigned recipient. Do not post the full list anywhere. For remote groups, copy each person's line individually into DMs.
What if someone drops out after the draw?
Re-run the generator without them. If gifts were already bought, the person who drew the dropout gets reassigned and can repurpose or exchange their gift. Draw early (3 to 4 weeks before the exchange) to leave buffer time.
