𧦠Sock Size Calculator
Shoe size in, correct sock size out.
Your sock size
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your shoe size, pick the sizing system (US men's, US women's, US kids', UK men's, or EU), and hit Find My Sock Size. The calculator converts to US men's equivalents internally, then maps to a sock size with the shoe range it covers. UK and EU entries are converted first, so enter whatever your shoes say. If you are between sizes or buying unisex socks as a woman, read the fit notes in the details.
Enter your shoe size as printed in your best-fitting shoes.
Pick the matching sizing system from the dropdown.
Hit Find My Sock Size and read your letter size plus its shoe range.
Between sizes? Size up for comfort, down for a snug sport fit.
The Method: Convert, Then Range-Match
Shoe systems convert to one scale first: UK men's runs about half a size below US men's, EU about 33 above, women's about 1.5 above men's for the same foot. Then the men's-equivalent size drops into sock ranges: under 6 is S, 6 to 8.5 is M, 9 to 11.5 is L, 12 and up is XL. Women's and kids' results are reported in their own lettering but computed from the same foot size. The worked example: a women's US 8 converts to men's 6.5, which lands in M (men's 6-8.5). These ranges match the major athletic brands' published charts; fashion brands vary more, so check their specific chart for dress socks.
Worked Example
Three shoppers. A man wearing US 11: men's 11 falls in 9-11.5, so L. A woman wearing US 9: convert to men's 7.5, which is M on the men's scale, reported as women's M. A kid wearing US kids' 2: kids' 2 is roughly a women's 3.5 to 4, a small foot, landing in kids' M (big kid 1-4 range). Enter each above with the right system selected and the calculator returns the letter size plus the shoe range it covers, so you can sanity-check against the package.
Fit Notes That Matter
The heel pocket should cup your heel with the toe seam sitting at or just past your toes; if the heel patch rides up your Achilles, the socks are too small, and if it bunches at the ankle, too big. Athletic socks fit snugger by design; the same foot might take M in running socks and L in thick hiking socks. Cushioning changes effective size: heavy-cushion socks in your normal size feel tighter. When a brand's chart disagrees with this calculator, trust the brand's chart for that brand; sizing is not standardized across the industry.
Buying Smart
Replace socks in batches: elastic dies around the same time across a drawer, and rotating 7-10 pairs extends each pair's life versus wearing 3 pairs constantly. Match sock height to shoes before worrying about size: no-shows with loafers, crew with boots. For gifts, when you know the shoe size but not the preference, mid-calf crew in the correct letter size is the safe universal choice. And keep one spare pair in your bag if you commute in rain; wet socks are a miserable day, and the fix costs almost nothing.
Compression Socks: Sizing Gets Serious
Compression socks are the exception to casual sock sizing: they need calf and ankle measurements, not just shoe size, because the graduated pressure depends on fit. Measure the ankle at its narrowest, the calf at its widest, and the leg length; match all three to the manufacturer's chart. Too loose and they do nothing; too tight and they are miserable and potentially harmful. Compression levels run 15-20 mmHg (mild, over-the-counter, good for travel and long days standing) to 20-30 mmHg (firm, often recommended post-procedure) and above (prescription territory). Put them on in the morning before swelling starts, using the inside-out roll technique or donning gloves. Runners and nurses swear by them; frequent flyers should consider them for flights over 4 hours. When in doubt about medical need, ask a doctor, not a shoe store.
Wool Versus Cotton: Material Matters
Size is half the fit; material is the other half. Merino wool regulates temperature, resists odor for days, and cushions without bulk; it costs more and wears faster at the heel, so look for reinforced heels and toes. Cotton is cheap and soft but holds sweat, which means blisters on hikes and cold feet in winter; fine for daily wear, poor for activity. Synthetics wick well and last long but can smell; blends split the difference. Cushioning level changes effective size: heavy-cushion hiking socks in your normal letter size fit snugger than thin dress socks in the same size. Buy for the activity: dress socks thin and tall, athletic socks cushioned and activity-height, hiking socks wool and cushioned. The calculator's size is the starting point; the material picks the winner.
A Second Worked Example: The EU Conversion
Shoes say EU 43. Convert to US men's: 43 minus 33 is 10. US men's 10 falls in the 9 to 11.5 range, so sock size L. The same foot in UK sizing would be about UK 9.5 (half below US men's), and the answer is still L, because the conversion funnels every system into the same men's-equivalent scale before range-matching. Enter whatever your shoes say; the calculator handles the rest.
Between sizes after conversion, size up for comfort socks and down for snug sport fits. The ranges are wide on purpose: sock sizing is forgiving, roughly two shoe sizes per letter, so near-misses still fit.
Sock Height and Cushioning
Height runs no-show, ankle, quarter, crew, and knee-high, and the choice is activity plus footwear: no-shows for loafers, crew for boots and everyday, knee-high for compression or dress uniforms. Cushioning is separate: light cushion for everyday, medium for walking, heavy for hiking and cold weather. More cushion means a tighter shoe fit, so heavily cushioned socks can demand a half size up in shoes.
Compression socks are the exception to casual sizing: they are sized by calf and ankle circumference, not shoe size, because the compression gradient is the product. Measure the leg per the maker's chart; shoe-size guessing gives wrong compression, which defeats the purpose.
Common Sock Mistakes
First: cotton for sports. Cotton holds moisture against the skin, and wet cotton plus friction equals blisters; athletic socks use wool or synthetics that wick. Second: the wrong size bunching. Too-big socks wrinkle inside the shoe and blister; too-small ones strangle the toes. Match the range, not the hope.
Third: ignoring the shoe. Thick hiking socks in tight shoes compress the foot; fit shoes with the socks you will wear. Fourth: the worn-elastic hang-on. Socks lose elasticity long before they get holes; sagging socks bunch and blister. Replace on stretch, not on holes. Fifth: one sock for everything. Dress socks, sport socks, and work socks are different products; the drawer should reflect the life.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sock size do I wear?
Match your shoe size: US men's shoes 6 to 8.5 take sock size M (shoe 8-9 range in sock labeling), 9 to 11.5 take L, 12 to 15 take XL. Women's shoes 4 to 6.5 take sock size S, 7 to 9.5 take M, 10+ take L. Enter your shoe size above for the exact recommendation.
How do sock sizes relate to shoe sizes?
Sock sizes are ranges labeled by the shoe sizes they fit, often printed as "fits shoe 6-12" which spans multiple sock sizes of stretch. Dedicated sock sizing (S/M/L/XL) maps to shoe ranges: the calculator converts your exact shoe size to the right letter size so you are not guessing from vague packaging.
Are men's and women's sock sizes different?
Yes, because the shoe ranges differ: a women's 8 is a smaller foot than a men's 8. Always convert within your gender's chart. Unisex socks usually follow the men's scale, so women buying unisex should typically size down one. The calculator has separate men, women, and kids modes.
What sock size for kids?
Kids' socks use shoe-size ranges too: roughly, toddler shoes 5-8 take sock size XS, little kid 9-13 take S, big kid 1-4 take M, and 4-7 take L. Kids outgrow socks fast, so many parents buy the top of the fitting range. Enter the child's shoe size above in kids mode.
Do socks stretch to fit multiple sizes?
Knit socks stretch a lot, which is why one pair claims to fit shoes 6 through 12. But stretched-to-the-limit socks thin out, slide down, and wear faster. Buying your actual size gives better cushioning and a heel that stays put. When between sizes, size up for comfort or down for a snug athletic fit.
What is the difference between crew, ankle, and no-show?
Height, not size: crew hits mid-calf, quarter hits above the ankle, ankle sits at the bone, no-show hides inside the shoe. Sizing (S/M/L) is the same across heights. Match the height to the shoe: no-show for loafers and low sneakers, crew for boots and high-tops.
How do I convert UK or EU shoe sizes to socks?
Convert the shoe size to US first, then to socks: UK men's = US men's minus 0.5 (roughly), EU sizes run about 33 larger than US men's (EU 42 is about US 9). The calculator accepts UK and EU shoe sizes and converts before sizing the sock, so enter what your shoes say.
Why do my socks always slide down?
Usually wrong size (too big, so the heel pocket sits wrong) or worn-out elastic. Socks sized to your actual shoe range grip the heel and stay up; oversized "one size fits most" pairs are the classic slider. Replace pairs whose cuffs have lost snap: no size fixes dead elastic.
