How to Use This Random Student Picker
Paste your class list into the box, press Pick Random, and the tool reveals one student at a time. It never repeats a name until everyone has been picked, so participation stays fair and nobody can claim they are always skipped. Save the roster once and it is there waiting next time you open the page.
Paste or type student names into the roster box, one name per line. Ten sample names are preloaded so you can try the picker right away.
Click Pick Random to reveal the next student. The name shows big at the top, and the remaining counter ticks down.
Keep picking. When the last name is drawn, the pool refills with a fresh shuffle and a new round begins automatically.
Click Save Roster to keep the name list in this browser for next time. Reset clears the history and starts a new round.
How It Works
Behind the button is a simple but provably fair method. Your roster is shuffled with the Fisher-Yates algorithm, which gives every possible ordering an equal chance, using the browser built-in cryptographically secure random numbers. The tool then walks through that shuffled order one name at a time. Because the order is fixed before picking starts, a name can never appear twice in a round, and no one is favored.
The round system solves the classic cold-calling problem. Pure random picking lets luck cluster: with 30 students, the same name can come up twice while five others never appear, and students notice. Drawing without replacement guarantees coverage. Every student knows they will be picked exactly once per round, which raises attention because anyone could be next, but it also feels fair because nobody is skipped.
Worked Example
A teacher pastes a roster of 24 students and presses Pick Random during a review lesson. The first draw reveals "Maya". The remaining counter drops from 24 to 23, and Maya joins the history list. After 24 picks, every student has been called exactly once, and the round counter advances to round 2 with a fresh shuffle. The teacher uses the history list at the end of the week to confirm that each student answered three times across three rounds, and those participation notes feed directly into grades.
Classroom Tips
Use the picker for reading aloud, whiteboard problems, discussion questions, and lab roles. Tell students up front that everyone gets picked once per round, and attention goes up immediately. For shy students, pair the pick with a "phone a friend" option so the randomness feels like a game instead of a trap. If you teach multiple sections, save each roster separately by picking, saving, and re-pasting between classes, or keep one browser profile per class. Finally, keep the history list visible during participation grading weeks; it is an honest log of who contributed.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the no-repeat picking work?
When you press Pick Random, the tool shuffles your roster once with the Fisher-Yates algorithm and then draws names in that shuffled order. Every name is picked exactly once before the list refills and reshuffles. That means no student gets called twice while another has not been called at all, which is the fairest setup for cold-calling and class participation.
What happens when every name has been picked?
Once the last remaining name is drawn, the picked pool refills automatically with a brand-new shuffle, and the history continues. The remaining counter goes back to the full class size. You do not have to press Reset unless you want to clear the picked history list and start the log over.
Does it save my roster between visits?
Yes, optionally. Click "Save Roster" to store the name list in your browser local storage. Next time you open the tool on the same device and browser, the roster is restored automatically. Nothing is sent to a server, so rosters stay private to that device. If you clear your browser data, the saved roster goes with it.
How is this different from a wheel spinner?
A wheel spinner draws with replacement, which means the same name can land three times while others never come up. This picker draws without replacement: each round covers every student exactly once. That makes it fairer for grading participation and for activities where everyone must get a turn, like presentations and reading aloud.
Can I pick more than one name at once?
Each press of Pick Random draws one name, which keeps the drama of a single reveal. If you need pairs or teams, press it twice or use our Random Group Generator, which splits the whole roster into balanced groups in one click. The picked history list makes it easy to track which names came up together.
Will it handle duplicate or messy names?
Blank lines are ignored automatically, and names are used exactly as typed, so "Ava" and "Ava R." are treated as two different students. If your roster has a name twice, it will be picked twice per round, because each line is a separate entry. Tidy the list in the box first if you want one pick per student.
