Right span, right height, right airflow.

Sizing by Room

Ceiling fans are sized by blade span against room square footage: up to 75 sq ft takes a 29 to 36 inch fan, 76 to 144 takes 36 to 42, 144 to 225 takes 44 to 50, and 225 to 400 takes 50 to 60. Larger great rooms use 60+ inch fans or two smaller ones. This calculator maps your room to the right span and computes the downrod length from your ceiling height.

Blade height matters as much as span. Blades should hang 8 to 9 feet above the floor for safety and best airflow: 7 feet minimum by code. On an 8-foot ceiling that means a flush or hugger mount; 9 feet takes a 6-inch downrod; 10 feet takes 12 inches; and so on, roughly a foot of downrod per foot of ceiling above 8. Vaulted ceilings need a downrod long enough to clear the slope plus an angled mount adapter.

Direction and Speed

Run counterclockwise in summer so the breeze blows down on you (the wind-chill effect lets you raise the thermostat about 4 degrees with no comfort loss). Reverse to clockwise on low in winter to push warm air off the ceiling without a draft. Bigger blades move more air at lower, quieter speeds, which is another reason not to undersize.

Energy Note

A typical fan draws 15 to 75 watts versus 3,500 for central AC. Using fans to raise your thermostat setting 4 degrees can cut cooling costs 20 to 30 percent. Turn fans off in empty rooms: unlike AC, fans cool people, not rooms.

Direction and Downrod Rules

Size is only half the job. In summer, blades should spin counterclockwise (viewed from below) to push air down and create the wind-chill effect; in winter, flip to clockwise on low to gently recirculate warm air pooled at the ceiling without a draft. Most fans have a small switch on the motor housing for this. Blade height matters: the sweet spot is 8 to 9 feet off the floor. With standard 8-foot ceilings, a flush or hugger mount works; with 9 feet or more, add a downrod so blades sit at the right height (roughly one inch of rod per foot of extra ceiling). Never install with blades below 7 feet in a walking path.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size ceiling fan for a 12x12 bedroom?

144 square feet takes a 44 to 50 inch fan (or 36 to 42 at minimum). On an 8-foot ceiling use a hugger mount.

How long should the downrod be?

Blades should sit 8 to 9 feet off the floor. On a 9-foot ceiling use a 6-inch downrod, 10 feet takes 12 inches, roughly a foot of rod per foot of ceiling above 8.

Which way should a ceiling fan spin in summer?

Counterclockwise when viewed from below, so air blows down on you. In winter, reverse to clockwise on low to recirculate warm air without a draft.

Can a ceiling fan cool an empty room?

No. Fans cool people via wind chill, not air. Turn them off when you leave; unlike AC there is no benefit to running them empty.

Do ceiling fans lower AC bills?

Yes. The breeze lets you raise the thermostat about 4 degrees comfortably, cutting cooling costs 20 to 30 percent for pennies of fan electricity.
