π¦ Dehumidifier Size Calculator
The right pints for your dampness.
Pints and Dampness
Dehumidifiers are rated in pints of water removed per day. The right size depends on square footage and how damp the space is: slightly damp spaces (musty smell, no visible moisture) need the baseline, very damp spaces (condensation on walls, visible damp spots) need about 1.5x, and wet spaces (seepage, standing water history) need 2x or a dedicated commercial approach. This calculator applies the industry sizing chart: for example, 1,000 sq ft slightly damp needs a 30-pint unit, very damp needs 40 to 50, wet needs 60+.
Undersizing is the classic mistake: a 30-pint unit in a wet 1,500 sq ft basement runs constantly, never reaches target humidity, and burns out early. Oversizing slightly is harmless for dehumidifiers (unlike ACs), because they cycle on a humidistat: buy one size up when between ratings.
Target Humidity
Aim for 30 to 50 percent relative humidity: under 30 dries skin and woodwork, over 60 grows mold and dust mites. Basements naturally run damper; a hygrometer ($10) tells you the truth before you buy. In very damp spaces, fix water intrusion first: no dehumidifier outruns an active leak.
Running It Right
Keep doors and windows closed while it runs, place it centrally with airflow clearance, and drain continuously via hose if possible: emptying buckets gets old fast. Clean the filter monthly. In winter, cold basements need units rated for low-temperature operation or coils freeze up.
Basement Moisture Sources
A dehumidifier manages humidity; it cannot fix water intrusion. Before buying, check the real sources: gutters dumping next to the foundation, grading that slopes toward the house, missing downspout extensions, and sump pumps that run constantly. Extending downspouts 6 feet from the house and regrading soil away from the foundation solve more damp basements than any appliance. Inside, look for condensation on cold water pipes (foam insulation fixes it) and dryer vents leaking into the space. If walls show efflorescence, that white crusty mineral deposit, water is wicking through the concrete: seal from the outside, not with interior paint, which just traps it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size dehumidifier do I need for a basement?
It depends on square footage and dampness. A 1,000 sq ft slightly damp basement needs ~30 pints; very damp needs 40-50; wet needs 60+. Use the calculator for your exact space.
Is a bigger dehumidifier better?
Slightly oversizing is fine (they cycle on a humidistat), unlike ACs. But massively oversized units cost more upfront for no benefit. One size up from the calculation is the sweet spot.
What humidity should a basement be?
Thirty to 50 percent relative humidity. Above 60 grows mold and dust mites; below 30 dries out woodwork and skin.
Do dehumidifiers help with mold?
They prevent new mold by keeping humidity under 60 percent, but they do not kill existing mold. Clean existing mold first, then maintain dry air to stop regrowth.
Should I use the bucket or a hose?
A drain hose to a floor drain or sink if possible. Buckets fill fast in damp spaces and the unit shuts off when full, defeating the purpose.
